Championing technical rigor and fearless experimentation in the world of dance, Michael Clark’s interpretations of ballet, punk, Dada, pop and rock have created a remarkable style of dance, earning him the distinction of being called “British dance’s true iconoclast.”

In a month-long artist residency with Miami Design District-based Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, Clark’s latest work will be created in response to the architectural spirit and cultural context of the South Florida region, and will draw from the principal’s own musical tastes.

Michael Clark Company’s residency, public performances and programming will take place within the unique architecture of the YoungArts Jewel Box, which will also serve as a source of inspiration for dancers immersed in the light patterns and colorful mosaic reflections of the space.  This venue, which receives its name from an exterior covered in thick hammered stained glass tapestries, was designed by Ignacio Carrera-Justiz of Coral Gables and renowned French stained glass artists Gabriel and Jacques Loire, based on a painting by German artist Johannes Dietz.  As one of the city’s architectural gems, the YoungArts Campus has been a vessel for placemaking in Miami, often allowing for creative collaborations, artist residencies, and site-specific programming.

Public audiences will be invited to experience Michael Clark Company’s new work for “ICA Performs: Michael Clark Company” as well as learn more about the star and his vision via open studios and a Salon talk.  In anticipation of the debut performance, an intimate conversation themed “Rebellion & Innovation” will take place inside Ted’s at YoungArts with Michael Clark, ICA Miami’s Deputy Director and Chief Curator Alex Gartenfeld, and 2008 YoungArts alumna Brittany Bailey, especially known for her intensely held postures and metamorphosis into impossibly small shapes.
