Sunshine streams from a circle of blue sky directly above. On all sides the absolute blackness of spiralling thunderstorms. And directly below, peeking through low haze, the violent ocean’s high waves crashing into one another.

It’s surface has become so heated that even the greatest waves don’t spill up cooler waters. Through gradual suction from the warm body’s evaporations, the air rises rapidly, creating ever lower surface pressures, with around one tenth of the atmosphere flowing inwards as everything melts into air. In rapid deepening, the strong winds converge in a radial flow towards the center, but never reach the resting eye. Suspension in partial vacuum - it’s like nothing else on earth.

Each day, the rate of energy releasing is equivalent to 70 times the worldwide energy consumption of humans and 200 times the whole world’s electrical generating capacity, comparable to exploding a 10-megaton nuclear bomb every 20 minutes. I don’t think I need to tell you: nothing is ever lost. All is made from the same energy, travelling in endless cycles, one forming the other, just like the waves washing over the shore in tireless repetition. The world is very young.

This is a place of sublime beauty.

Brace Brace is an emergency equipment brand, founded by Annika Kuhlmann and Christopher Kulendran Thomas to reimagine the aesthetics of safety. This exhibition has been developed in collaboration with Jan-Peter Gieseking.
