Normally, Locust Projects' programming is designed to challenge and engage the most advanced, mature collectors and contemporary art enthusiasts. Internationally-renowned and local artists have come to roost, flexing their creative muscle in a hands-on way. But the biggest sources of curiosity and artistic enthusiasm often come from the smallest people...
Enter Locust Little LAB: Cupcakes and Crafts, a variant of Locust's ongoing LAB series where educators and artists convene to share and combine their skills with members of the community. This is its first year, and is one of the precious few contemporary art initiatives in Miami reaching out to such a young age group.
On October 5th, youngsters are invited to become pint-size Picassos (yummy snacks included!) as they are guided by Locust LAB graduates. For those who need a refresher: Locust LAB (Locust Arts Builders) is a program where South Florida high school students are selected to join a summer arts intensive led by accomplished practicing artists (this year, it was Monica Lopez de Victoria of the TM Sisters and Loriel Beltran).
But this day promises to be a fun, carefree experience for Miami's littlest future Lichtensteins, Warhols and Richters. And who's about to resist free treats? Didn't think so.
Locust Little LAB begins at 11:00am on Saturday, October 5th and runs until 1pm. Locust Projects is located at 3852 N Miami Avenue in the Miami Design District. RSVP at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (305) 576-8570. Admission is free.
