Theaster Gates is a Chicago-based artist, urban planner, and cultural provocateur whose critically acclaimed transformative work in Chicago was recently covered by the Wall Street Journal. They praised him for finding "a way to leverage an artistic practice to make a realtime, bottom-line difference in the lives and spaces next door. Gates says he's trying to invent 'the Main Street I want to hang out on,' but he is also pushing art beyond the sphere of social commentary into the arena of nitty-gritty do-gooding." And now Mr. Gates is coming to Miami.
Locust Projects celebrates their 15th anniversary on Saturday, November 10th with the opening of Gates' exhibit, Soul Manufacturing Corporation. The exhibit includes "a yoga instructor, a DJ, a reader, and potters, all of whom will interact with viewers."
You can also view his film work as part of Art Basel's 2012 Art Video program Friday, December 7, 9pm 'Laughing, Wondering & Meditating,' which explores different kinds of strangeness from works embracing unexpected encounters, humor, anxiety, and madness will include Theaster Gates's 'Sun Salutation', 2011 (Kavi Gupta Gallery), Julieta Aranda's 'Springtime', 2010 (Galeria OMR) and Dineo Seshee Bopape's 'The Problem Of Beauty', 2009 (Stevenson), among others.
