Paradise, Made

In his teens, he flirted with professional windsurfing. While his pursuits are now rooted in the ground, landscape designer Nathan Browning has definitely caught a wave. BY MARC KRISTAL

“I like to get my hands dirty,” Nathan Browning says. Resembling a bearded Indiana Jones (and, thanks to a dicey Skype connection, moving like a stopmotion animation figure), the 39-year-old landscape designer is sitting before a construction trailer at Vinh Hy Bay in Vietnam. It’s after 9 p.m., yet the grind of engines, mixed with the grating bark of a dog still punctuates what looks to be, from the designer’s damp forehead, a warm night. “A new resort for Aman,” Browning says of the project, the latest his Miami firm, Island Planning Corporation, has created for the brand. “Hotel and villas—the typical scenario,” he adds, with an Indy-esque droll, offhand assurance.
