Weekend preview: Oktoberfests, comedy and oyster beer

Another weekend, another Marley: On the heels of nephew Skip Marley’s performance in Parkland last Sunday, Julian Marley will kick off the popular weekly Miami Design District Performance Series on Friday night.

The free neighborhood gatherings at Palm Court (140 NE 39th St.), presented by the Knight Foundation and produced by 19-time Grammy winner Emilio Estefan, are beloved both for their distinctive communal vibe and the eclectic lineup.

This weekend’s season-opening concert by Bob Marley’s son and his band, the Uprising, will be followed by 10 more Friday performances through Dec. 14.

Highlights include the dance-pop nostalgia of Taylor Dayne (Oct. 12), Grammy-winning salsero Luis Enrique (Oct. 26), Nestor Torres with the Frost School of Music Jazz Ensemble (Nov.2), Cubaton star El Micha (Nov. 9), Bernadette Peters with the Miami Symphony Orchestra (Nov. 16), disco legend Thelma Houston (Nov. 30) and singer-songwriter Emily Estefan (Dec. 7).

Concerts are scheduled 6-9 p.m., with music beginning at 6:30 p.m. There are many top-notch dining and happy-hour options in the area, from Estefan Kitchen and Michael’s Genuine to the St. Roch Market food hall. For more information, visit MiamiDesignDistrict.net.

Marley fans living north can get their fix on Sunday at sixth annual Dirty River Reggae Fest, the free, all-ages roots-and-reggae blast at Guanabanas Island Restaurant & Bar in Jupiter.

Along with Julian Marley and the Uprising, the day will include like-minded music from Artikal Sound System, Spred the Dub, SowFlo, Moska Project and Roots Shakedown. The party is hosted by the irrepressible Lance-O from Kulcha Shok.
