ALYSON KRUEGERHorowitz’s top recommendation this year is ABMB’s large-scale outdoor projects in Collins Park. Head there on December 6 for a special performance by Jim Shaw and band D’red D’warf, which will blend progressive rock opera, prehistoric chanting, spoken word, and opera—because why not? Grab a cushioned picnic blanket and a bottle of your favorite wine, and prepare for a memorable event.
The Bass Museum
The one art destination that anybody who is anybody is talking about this year is the newly renovated Bass Museum. This contemporary-art museum closed in 2014 for a $12 million face-lift, and now it’s more spectacular and daring than ever. Reopened in October, the institution’s ABMB show is a solo exhibit by Mika Rottenberg, whose work compares capitalism to poetry. The details are a surprise, but we have no doubt it will be thought-provoking.
The Institute of Contemporary Art
Just in time for ABMB, the ICA is ready to show off its swanky new 37,500-square-foot building and sculpture garden. The museum has doubled its exhibition space—and it is certainly using it, hosting a major thematic survey named The Everywhere Studio that will show 100 works of art by more than 50 artists. To escape the crowds, head to the invite-only preview, held on December 4.
Miami Design District
In Miami, even the shopping boutiques get in on the action. Head to the Miami Design District to rub elbows with the fashion world and glimpse the development’s public art installations, pop-up exhibitions, and live performances. Don’t miss The Art of Fashion, WWD’s exhibition displaying iconic fashion moments in history.
