The Straight and Narrow
Summer waves wash in like the sea to the shore, but sleek hair, as seen on the runways at Michael Kors and Lacoste, is also a summer staple. Getting the look isn’t always easy, especially in South Florida when the frizz factor can take your locks from lovely to larger than life (thanks, humidity). To get a hairy situation under control, look to straightening treatments like Marcia’s Brazilian Keratin straightening or Bio Ionic Hair Straightening. Both will bring hair back to manageable heights. Hairdragon’s celeb stylist Frederic States points out highlights are back and work well with straight hair. He suggests keeping them subtle, in less dramatic tones than previous seasons to really capture the look and feel of the trend. Then try styling your new do in a low-slung bun (as seen at Givenchy) or a low ponytail with a middle part (the preferred style at Alexander Wang).
Fringe Benefits
Thinking about bangs? Opt for a fringe cut. Since Prada sent the jagged look down the spring/summer runways, scissors have started snipping. If you’re a brunette, pair the face-framing look with ombre color. States says while the trend may be out for blondes, ladies with darker locks can still opt for ombre, but suggests doing so with a clean tone-on-tone effect. If you have lighter locks, the next best shade for you starts by adding a base color to give a better blonde on blonde effect.
What About Bob?
Blame it on The Great Gatsby, but the bob may be one of the biggest hair trends to surface this summer. If you’re considering lobbing off your locks, keep in mind hair grows about half an inch a month and will be well into winter before you return to your roots.
Play Defense
No matter which style you spring for, States points out that the best way to keep your color in check is to cover it up. “Suncare products are back in style, too, so use them,” he says. The salon carries brands like Aveda and Leonor Greyl. Be sure to wet hair before jumping into the pool or ocean. It will help protect the elements from washing your summer hue right out of your hair.
